Working with assignments

Posted by mhsbulletin on February 6, 2008

Each assignment in a course must have a unique name.  If two assignments have the same name, even if they are in different terms, you run the risk of overwriting the scores of the first assignment entry.

You might want to work with a numbering system such as;

Notebook 1.1, Notebook 1.2  for notebook checks in term 1 and Notebook 2.1, Notebook 2.2 for notebook checks in term 2

Questions from Professional Development Day 1/22/08

Posted by mhsbulletin on January 20, 2008

ipass Frequently Asked Questions

How to set up rankbook?
Go to
http://mhsstudents.org/ipass/rankbook/
and follow the tutorial.

<For every three homeworks missing the student’s grade goes down ½ grade. Can this done?
If you tend to add or subtract points from a term grade the best method is
to hand enter the grades into the report card entry view. If you are using
the iPass rankbook to record assignment grades you will have to calculate
the final average and enter it by hand. You can no longer rely on rankbook
to calculate the correct final average

Can I set it up so I can give a daily grade
without listing assignments?

I am not sure if I understand the question. One answer would be to create a
category called “daily progress” and assign it a  percentage of the total term
grade. Then just enter one assignment called “daily progress” each term. Use this to
add your daily progress grade.
My other thought is to create an assignment for each date and give it a
minimal point value….say 3. Name each assignment by date 1/23 ,1/24
etc….whew that’s a lot of data entry!

I use a 1-6 point grade system for daily classwork/homework
assignments & class participation. How can I incorporate this into IPASS?

Just have your assignment total points equal to 6. Assignments do not need
to be 100.

I have “tests/Quizzes as
40% of my grade, but I’d like a test to weigh more than a quiz. In Easy
Grade Pro I assigned 100 points to a test and 50 points to a quiz and I
could still enter a percentage grade separately. I don’ see this option in
IPASS.
Sorry, the above worked in Easy Grade
Pro and Gradekeeper but in iPass you will have to use a different approach.
If you like to have test/quizzes combined as a percentage of the grade and
each test is worth twice that of a quiz then enter each test twice….a little
more work I’m afraid.!

Why are the grade averages
on easy grade pro & IPASS so different? IPASS seems to be higher than the
other – %’s are the same parameters, etc.
How do I know if my
YTD average is right?

One way is to click the YTD average from an individual student. Look at the
points possible and the points earned.
Go back to weights and data and click recompute the average. If you enter
grades into iPass rankbook and change them at a later date or if you changed
your weights for assignments your iPass average may not be correct.

I can’t get my average of
my grades to come out correct.
Go back to weights and data and click
recomputed the average. If you enter grades into iPass rankbook and change
them at a later date or if you changed your weights for assignments your
iPass average may not be correct.

How do I enter extra credit assignments and the stuff on page 2 “the
advanced stuff”?
To add extra credit to an individual
assignment give the student a grade higher than the total points.
To create an extra credit assignment.
Create an assignment, choose an assignment type based on where you would
like the extra credit to be included
Assign a point value
Enter double a twice the grade for each student who participates
Click the ignore assignment button for students who choose not to
participate in the extra credit

How to print all of the columns when there are so many?
One option is to change the dates in
the “dates for viewing” located in the rankbook view. Print the columns you
can see on the screen then go and change the dates to see and print another group of
assignments.
The other option is to create a report that can be opened with Excel.
Click Rankbook Reports from the menu on the left
Choose the correct term and the correct class
Highlight the assignments you wish to include.
Leave the student ID box blank
Click submit
Click the red paper icon at the top of the the rankbook view page
Your report will be the top report in available reports
Scroll to the right and right click on link in the Excel column
Save the file and then you can open it in Excel

How to highlight low scores?
Not possible…only the failing grades
for each assignment will show in red

How to highlight missing scores?
Not possible but you can create a report.
Click Rankbook reports on the left screen
Click Assignments due on the top of the new page
Select the term
Select the course
Select all the assignment types
List missing assignments =yes
How many missing=1
Include unscored assignments=yes
Include zero grades=yes
Click submit
Now go to the very top of the rankbook page and click the red piece of paper
icon Click the link under html and a report of missing assignments will open
How to subtract points from quarter grade ( for
missing homework)?

This needs to be done by hand. You can override the term grade when entering
grades for report cards. You will then have to override the final average as
the computer will continue to calculate a final average from your rankbook

If assignments in different terms have the same
name will the score not count? I am not 100% sue but my guess is no.

This seems to be an issue we cannot resolve. If you enter an assignment with
the same name as an assignment from a previous term iPass will change the
original assignment scores. Each assignment must have a unique name.

Do you put midterm grades in the same way you put
regular grades in?
How will teachers input Mid-Term exam grades.
If you mean in your rankbook yes. There must be midterm type and you must
have midterms weighed as 10% in your weights and data. If you do you can
enter your midterms in your rankbook.
If you are referring to entering midterm grades for report cards you must
enter them manually. They will not automatically roll over from your rank
book

How to enter midterm
grades so they won’t be part of Term 2?

If you have an assignment category of midterm grade and your midterms have
been entered as 10% of the total grade calculations in the weights and data
your midterm will not be averaged in a term grade

Will we be shown how to
adjust the percentages (weights) for terms/exams if a student is exempt? Can
the computer make that adjustment for individual students?

When you enter the exam grades into your
rankbook click ignore for students who do not need to take the exams. When
working on your grade input enter ex in the exam box. iPass will compute
averages without the exam adjusting the quarter and midyear weights.

How do you “get at” your midterm grade if you’ve
entered it under “weights & data”? I’d like to be able to enter my MYEx
grades to have Ipass keep a running overall average.

You can create a custom rankbook view where you will see only the term,
progress report, exam grades and year to date average
Click rankbook view on the top of the menu bar
Click customize
Give your view a name such as “summary”
Click the Grade Headings you wish to include Term1, Term 2, etc
Move them to the order you prefer, remove any you don’t wish to include
Click submit
From the rankbook view on the top menu Click your newly created view

Whose attendance will be “official”? There are
discprepencies. For instance, I had a student who was scheduled to be
dismissed at 1:45pm, yet the computer said she was “absent-dismissed”. Will
my “override” ( If I enter her as present) count?

The attendance totals you enter will be used for loss of credit.

Will we still be filling out loss of credit forms?
No, enter 113 in the comments for term 2 and 4 for loss of credit

If a student transfers classes (to a new cluster)
do the grades transfer?

No. But you may want to enter the previous term grades to you rankbook so a
year to date average will be calculated

I tried to sort my assignments but it put them out of order, even when I
tried sorting by date/type. Why?
You can only sort by date or by type.
I think when sorted by date it is determined with settings  the
Rankbook Maintenance view.

How do you exempt a student from an assignment?
When entering the grade click
checkbox “Ignore” and the assignment will not count
Setting parameters – new
students are not exempted from assignments, which occurred prior to entering
class.

I have a student who transferred into my class in T2 – so for T1 she has no
scores – Do I grade her on just T2-T4.
Ask her former teacher for the numerical term 1 grade.
Create an assignment in term 1 and name it something like “transfer” select
any assignment type. In enter grades view ignore this assignment for all
students except the transferred student where you will enter the term 1
grade. This will now be the term 1 average for that student and it will
average into the final grade.

I’d like information re: reports (both per student & class).
Is there a way to retrieve a deleted assignment?
Sorry, I don’t know of any way to do that

How do I get it to accept scores over100?
Go to the “RankBook Maintenance”
Be sure to check the “Use my school’s grade table for my grades” The screen
below will open
Start your Grades at 0  and Select Last grade to any number other than 100.
(If you use a point system 500 is the max for an assignment . The program
will always calculate the number of points received from the number of
points available and return a percent grade)
Click Submit. Now any grade above 100 ….as
long as the max points for the available assignment is set at 100…will
include extra credit. This entry will have a * next to the grade.

How do I put in the midterm grade not under term 2?
Put it in another term. As long as
the type selected is midterm and you have weighted midterm as 10% of the
final grade you should be fine.

Can teachers change the weight (%) of categories, such as “quiz” or “Essay”,
for Term 2 or will this affect the grades in Term 1?
If you never change any grades in any
student in term 1 it will be ok. You would wise to keep a hard copy of the
first term grades as a back up just in case.
What happens to student’s grades at the end of the year if their Term 1
grade was entered as a letter grade rather than a numerical grade?
If you enter a term grade as a letter
the letter grade will be counted as the average of that grade range for
final grade computation ie A- would be a 92, A 94.5, and A+ 98

Why doesn’t the email link to parents in rankbook work? I’ve sent emails,
and they don’t go anywhere.
That needs to be set up by someone
other than us! Use
your Outlook for sending email click the student ID number to locate the email address and copy the email address into Outlook

I can only access my students on my liaison list if they are in my class.
Can Special education teachers be allowed access to constantly check the
status of our liaison list if not in my class?
I am not familiar with the liaison list…

Working with reports
in add/modify rankbook.
Is there a way to print just the grade average
(category average) without printing the entire list of assignments?
